Com­pe­ti­tion Pink Lady Food Pho­tog­ra­pher Of The Year 2018

The many and var­ied facets of the food and wine in­dus­tries have again been cel­e­brated with the an­nual Pink Lady® Food Pho­tog­ra­pher Of The Year com­pe­ti­tion, at­tract­ing 8000 en­tries from pho­tog­ra­phers and film­mak­ers in 60 coun­tries.

It’s grown into the world’s largest pho­tog­ra­phy com­pe­ti­tion ded­i­cated to all as­pects of grow­ing, pre­par­ing and pre­sent­ing food. This year the Pink Lady Food POTY at­tracted over 8000 en­tries from 60 coun­tries. Cam­era ed­i­tor Paul Bur­rows was one of the judges.

Bangladeshi pho­tog­ra­pher Noor Ahmed Ge­lal has won the 2018 Pink Lady Food Pho­tog­ra­pher Of The Year com­pe­ti­tion, the world’s lead­ing cel­e­bra­tion of the art of food pho­tog­ra­phy and film. Ti­tled Pray­ing With Food, the win­ning im­age de­picts the break­ing of a day-long fast at a Hindu tem­ple in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Ge­lal was pre­sented with the £5000 prize by Andy Mac­don­ald, who heads up Pink Lady in the United King­dom, at a glit­ter­ing Cham­pagne Tait­tinger re­cep­tion packed with celebri­ties from the food and pho­tog­ra­phy world at the Mall Gal­leries in Lon­don. Host for the evening was the leg­endary TV presenter and chef Prue Leith. “The com­pe­ti­tion was fierce,” says Andy Mac­don­ald. “There were 8000 im­ages en­tered from 60 coun­tries and the stan­dard was ex­cep­tional. Noor’s shot stood out from the rest in its cat­e­gory, how­ever, for the way in which he made the sub­ject mat­ter so fas­ci­nat­ing and dis­tinc­tive.”

Martin Parr, one of the world’s great­est so­cial doc­u­men­tary pho­tog­ra­phers, whose work shows food in its cul­tural place in so­ci­ety, was pre­sented with the Out­stand­ing Achieve­ment Award by Frances Morris, Direc­tor of Tate Bri­tain.

For The Love Of Food won the unearthed Food Film Shorts (sup­ported by Food­ism) cat­e­gory for short films on a food-re­lated theme. Filmed by the With Love Project, the win­ning film doc­u­mented food pro­duc­tion and cook­ing on the Isle of Skye, Scot­land. Film-mak­ers Rob Evans, Matt Roberts and Chris Roberts were pre­sented with a £1000 prize by Si­mon Day, Founder of unearthed.

The judg­ing panel this year was chaired by in­ter­na­tion­ally-renowned food pho­tog­ra­pher David Lof­tus, and in­cluded Emily Luchetti (Chair of the James Beard Foun­da­tion, NYC), culi­nary su­per­star Fer­ran Adria, Wa­j­mar Yaqubi (Global Photo Direc­tor, Buz­zfeed) and His Ex­cel­lency Ali Bin Thalith (Sec­re­tary Gen­eral, HIPA).
