Competition Pink Lady Food Photographer Of The Year 2018
The many and varied facets of the food and wine industries have again been celebrated with the annual Pink Lady® Food Photographer Of The Year competition, attracting 8000 entries from photographers and filmmakers in 60 countries.
It’s grown into the world’s largest photography competition dedicated to all aspects of growing, preparing and presenting food. This year the Pink Lady Food POTY attracted over 8000 entries from 60 countries. Camera editor Paul Burrows was one of the judges.
Bangladeshi photographer Noor Ahmed Gelal has won the 2018 Pink Lady Food Photographer Of The Year competition, the world’s leading celebration of the art of food photography and film. Titled Praying With Food, the winning image depicts the breaking of a day-long fast at a Hindu temple in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Gelal was presented with the £5000 prize by Andy Macdonald, who heads up Pink Lady in the United Kingdom, at a glittering Champagne Taittinger reception packed with celebrities from the food and photography world at the Mall Galleries in London. Host for the evening was the legendary TV presenter and chef Prue Leith. “The competition was fierce,” says Andy Macdonald. “There were 8000 images entered from 60 countries and the standard was exceptional. Noor’s shot stood out from the rest in its category, however, for the way in which he made the subject matter so fascinating and distinctive.”
Martin Parr, one of the world’s greatest social documentary photographers, whose work shows food in its cultural place in society, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award by Frances Morris, Director of Tate Britain.
For The Love Of Food won the unearthed Food Film Shorts (supported by Foodism) category for short films on a food-related theme. Filmed by the With Love Project, the winning film documented food production and cooking on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Film-makers Rob Evans, Matt Roberts and Chris Roberts were presented with a £1000 prize by Simon Day, Founder of unearthed.
The judging panel this year was chaired by internationally-renowned food photographer David Loftus, and included Emily Luchetti (Chair of the James Beard Foundation, NYC), culinary superstar Ferran Adria, Wajmar Yaqubi (Global Photo Director, Buzzfeed) and His Excellency Ali Bin Thalith (Secretary General, HIPA).
