Police taking no chances at Greens Lake
GREENS Lake will once again be closed for New Year’s Eve as Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has said it is in the interest of public safety.
Peter Clydesdale, GMW acting general manager of customer operations, said this would be the fifth year Greens Lake was closed on New Year’s Eve at the request of the region’s emergency services.
“In the interests of public safety it is our duty to close Greens Lake to avoid any tragedies occurring over the New Year’s holiday period,” Mr Clydesdale said.
“The concerns raised with us by local emergency services and community members cannot be ignored.”
Stanhope Police Leading Senior Constable Frank Scopelliti said police and the CFA made the call to close Greens Lake based on public safety concerns.
“The events leading up to the first lake closure in 2014 were such that it was only a matter of time before a life-threatening tragedy would occur. The actions of drug and alcohol-affected people can put their own and others’ safety at risk,” Snr Cst Scopelliti said.
“Emergency services have come to us and have raised serious safety concerns. We are again closing the lake for a short period over New Year’s on this expert advice and in the interests of the wider community.’’
The lake will be closed from 12pm on Saturday, December 29 to 12pm on Tuesday, January 1.
