Relationship cultivates cultural ties

Canning Gazette - - NEWS -

JAPANESE exchange students from The High School of the University of Hyogo were in Perth recently to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its relationship with Willetton SHS.

One of the oldest sister school relationships in WA, the bond was established in 1998.

Since then, Willetton SHS students have made annual excursions to Japan, immersing themselves in Japanese music, TV, food and way of life.

During their twoweek stay in Perth, the Japanese students enjoyed a picnic at Kings Park and visit to Caversham Wildlife Park.

Willetton SHS deputy principal Nathan Harvey said there was a large number of Japanese language enrolments at the school.

“Hosting Japanese exchange students and providing opportunities for students to interact with Japanese speakers in our own community, we support in-country experiences to enrich language learning and the development of the students’ intercultural understandings,’’ he said.
