VICTORIA Park Xavier hockey player Karri Sommerville is one of four West Australians selected for the under-21 national women’s hockey team to play India and New Zealand.

The Kensington resident was picked for the Jillaroos to compete in the Tri Series in Canberra from December 3 to 8.

The squad was chosen following the 2019 under21 National Championships in July.

Sommerville is currently part of the Hockeyroos Development Squad and Perth Thundersticks squad.

“We’ve chosen Karri from the National Development Squad as (a) targeted athlete in the Hockey Australia pathway,” coach Tim White said.

New Zealand and India will provide tough opposition for the Jillaroos and White is looking forward to seeing how his players handle the occasion on home soil.

“The battles we have with New Zealand are always hotly contested,” he said. “India are very much an emerging nation in the women’s game and they will also be really strong opposition.”

The team will assemble in Canberra on November 30 for a training camp before the first match against New Zealand on December 3.
