Swan­care’s golden age of in­no­va­tion

BENT­LEY aged care provider Swan­care has been recog­nised na­tion­ally.

The not-for-profit or­gan­i­sa­tion re­ceived the 2019 Na­tional Aged Care Award for in­no­va­tion for two ini­tia­tives de­vel­oped in part­ner­ship with Curtin Med­i­cal School and Univer­sity of Notre Dame.

Now in its third year, the Swan­care/ Curtin Med­i­cal School part­ner­ship gives med­i­cal stu­dents an op­por­tu­nity to build a pos­i­tive re­la­tion­ships with se­niors.

Swan­care res­i­dent Su­san Lewis said she en­joyed mak­ing bonds with stu­dents and had learnt so much about their views and dif­fer­ent cul­tures.

“It’s im­por­tant for doc­tors to be aware of the pro­cesses of age­ing both phys­i­cally and men­tally, as peo­ple are liv­ing longer th­ese days,’’ she said.

The Swan­care/ Notre Dame Univer­sity part­ner­ship was in­tro­duced to help meet the com­plex needs of res­i­dents. Each year two nurse stu­dents are cho­sen to com­plete post grad­u­ate stud­ies and at­tain their Grad­u­ate Cer­tifi­cate in Clin­i­cal Nurs­ing while work­ing at Swan­care’s res­i­den­tial care fa­cil­i­ties.
