Canning Gazette - - SPORT -

HOCKEY teams from Singapore, Malaysia and Japan took on teams of young WA players in Under18 Girls, Under16 Girls and Under16 Boys’ matches for the FHE Cup last month.

The matches were held in sweltering conditions at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

The FHE Cup started in 2007 to enable junior players to experience international hockey.

The Under 16 Girls gold medal match between Japan and Kuala Lumpur SS was a thriller, with the game going to a penalty shoot-out after scores were tied 1-1 at the end of the game.

Japan scored 2 to nil in the shoot-out, taking home the victory.

In the Under 16 Girls bronze medal match, WA Possums were victorious over WA Quokkas, 2-1.

Portia Miller, who played extremely well throughout the whole tournament, scored both of the Possums’ goals, while Hayleigh Duck scored for the Quokkas.

The Under 16 Boys competition ended in another thriller, with the gold medal match between Japan and the WA Echidnas also going to a penalty shoot-out.

Japan took home the win 3-5, with goals scored by Ryoga Ito, Atsuki Yamanaka, Joudai Saeki and Shu Hasegawa (2) for Japan, and Fletcher Wetherell, Hamish Adamson and Tom Keating for the WA Echidnas.

In the Under 18 Boys bronze medal match, Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) from Malaysia ran away with the win, scoring four goals to the WA Whale

Sharks nil.

Hockey WA chief executive Stu Gilsenan said the games showed the highest standards of hockey.

“The vision and continued dedication of Yoshi Sashiki allows the FHE Cup to embrace more of our Asian hockey nations and increase the profile for both the U16 and U18 competitions,” he said.
