Move to egg on reading habit

Canning Times - - NEWS -

A GIANT egg is making its way across Armadale, Gosnells and Canning in a local spin on a popular national campaign.

Paint the Highway REaD is a local version of the Paint the Town REaD campaign, which encourages communities to read, talk, sing and rhyme to babies and children.

As part of the campaign, a reading egg is travelling around libraries, schools, shopping centres and playgroups in the areas, with children helping the egg to grow by reading, singing or rhyming to it.

Gosnells Mayor Glenn Dewhurst said the egg would be hatched during Children’s Week in October, revealing a local mascot that will promote early literacy.

“When children read, sing, talk or rhyme to the egg, it will grow, just like these activities nourish children’s brain development,” he said. “Most of our brain development happens in the first three years of our lives, so developing literacy skills and a love of learning during this time will give our children the best opportunities in life.”
