Bid to reclassify sump
MARQUIS Street in Bentley is in line for more dwellings after City of Canning councillors voted to reclassify the road.
The council supported the reclassification of Lot 317 from public purpose to residential and the proposal will now be forwarded to the WA Planning Commission and Minister for Planning for final endorsement.
The location houses a drainage sump.
However, the City has proposed underground storage tanks be designed on the adjacent road verge for the required drainage, freeing up the land to be developed into residential dwellings. The new zoning is classified as R40 (residential), which is the same zoning as that of the surrounding area.
City of Canning Mayor Paul Ng said the decision was a result of City staff looking for opportunities where land could be better utilised.
“Our commercial land asset strategy outlines the City’s commitment to realising opportunities on surplus land in order to deliver a high rate of return on the City’s land assets,” he said.
“The change in zoning will allow up to three residential dwellings to be built.”
