THE Cannington Blood Donor Centre needs 450 people to donate plasma in the next month. Each donation helps treat people suffering serious burns or cancer, protects people with brain or blood disorders, and protects children against chicken pox. Blood Service spokeswoman Jessica Willet said donating plasma was a lot like giving blood and took about 90 minutes. “Plasma is a versatile part of your blood, so you can really unlock your blood’s full potential by giving a plasma donation,” Ms Willet said. Plasma can be used in 18 different ways and with demand for this powerful component of blood growing rapidly every year, donations are always needed. Continuous improvements in the detection of some health conditions, an ageing population and the high standard of care in Australia are thought to be behind the rapid growth in demand.
