Bancroft holds out Bears

Canning Times - - SPORT -

CAM Bancroft stood tall with a hard-fought 95 on Saturday but with limited support from his fellow batsman, Willetton is in trouble after the first day of its Premier Cricket clash with Bayswater Morley.

Bancroft’s innings was carved from 230 deliveries, highlighting his determination to get back to the highest level and get his team over the line in tricky conditions.

He opened with Izsak Minentis and they put on 50 before Ross Loiacono claimed Minentis and ripped through Willetton’s top order.

Aaron Hardie, Shayne Wornes and Kallen Bond all fell victim to Loiacono’s sizzling spell.

Bears bowlers Jonty Wilde and James Wainman joined in on the action soon after, taking out Alex Hepburn and Blair Walsh as Willetton fell to a disastrous 6-91.

Amid the chaos Bancroft stood resolute, defending his way through the middle overs to produce a potentially matchsaving 58-run partnership with Brennan Wilson.

After Loiacono’s fifth wicket of the day, Bancroft boosted the total to 173 before falling victim to a brilliant delivery from Bears’ captain Liam O’Connor.

The Bears took the final two wickets in the next six deliveries as they bowled Willetton out for 174.

In response, the Bears posted 1-24 before the end of the day’s play.
