Raising the bar in Riverton
THE social scene in Riverton just got a whole lot more exciting thanks to a brand new tavern.
Calls have been growing in the area for a new bar after the closure of the High Road Hotel in Parkwood and the Lynwood Arms, and finally those calls have been answered by local family restaurateurs, the Graham-Helwigs.
The Riverton Bar and Grill opened its doors two weeks ago to strong turnouts and excited locals.
Built by the Slater Group, which recently finished a $4 million transformation of Subiaco Hotel, the new bar is impressive and timeless, with chic black and white interiors.
Behind the menu is executive chef Jay Marchant, previously from The Terrace Hotel. He’s brought his method of cooking and style to create pub favourites such as steaks, burgers and fish of the day but it’s the Rivo Patty Melt and the cheesy toast cheeseburger – a tribute to the venue being a former Sizzler building – that have quickly become signature dishes.
The menu includes a section dedicated to Thai dishes, given the family’s longheld ownership connection to Roxby Thai in Willetton and Melville.
Part-owner Nat GrahamHelwig said the family was overwhelmed by the positive feedback from locals.
“Our family has grown up locally and lived in the area for 35 years,’’ he said.
“My siblings and I went to Lynwood Senior High School and my children now go to Riverton primary, so as locals we knew that the community needed this venue.”
Riverton MLA Mike Nahan said it was great to see the return of a local tavern owned by a local family.
“Pubs have been bought by Coles and Woolworths as a strategic asset given their position and land size, so it’s great that this has been led by a local family familiar with what the community wants,” he said.
“Congratulations to the Graham-Helwig family for bringing back a tavern to the area – it’s sensational.”
Mr Graham-Helwig said the sports bar and restaurant venue would have live music performances on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as on Sunday afternoons.
A children’s cubby house was provided to create a family-friendly environment.
Nat and Mat Graham-Helwig are directors of the newly opened Riverton Bar and Grill.
