Boost for health unit
A NEW mental health unit that opened last week has doubled the number of beds available for young people at Bentley Health Service.
Health Minister Roger Cook said the 12-bed unit was for youths aged 16 to 24 with acute mental health problems.
Mr Cook said young people who experienced severe mental health problems such as psychosis, depression, severe anxiety, posttraumatic stress, risk of self-harm or suicide and emerging personality disorder were vulnerable.
“Seventy-five per cent of mental health problems start before the age of 25, so if we can get in early and help young people by providing appropriate care, we have an opportunity to dramatically improve their mental health outcomes so they can go on to lead happy lives,” he said.
