Show troops you care

Canning Times - - FRONT PAGE - Ben Smith

AS the holiday season approaches, Willetton Post Office is doing its bit to ensure our overseas soldiers do not feel left out.

The post office is working with the Department of Defence to collect goods for care packages to send to Australian troops serving overseas at Christmas.

Postal manager Jemma Zugaro appealed to the public to show their support by donating items for the packages.

She said it was important to give the soldiers a piece of home as a way of saying thank you for their dedication.

“We don’t see what they do physically, but we do see it in the way we do feel safe,” she said. “Anything you can give to say thank you, whether it’s one item, whether it’s a letter, whether it’s just a thank you, it’s not a lot out of your day and it will mean a lot to them.”

Miss Zugaro said the holiday season was the perfect time to show compassion to the troops overseas and reflect on the sacrifices they were making.

“Most of us are really lucky to have our families here for Christmas, and I just wanted to get the community involved in saying thank you for all of their hard work and we’re thinking of them even though they’re not home with their families,” she said.

“They give a lot to us and I think it’s the least we can do to acknowledge the work they’re doing and say thank you.”

The post office will accept non-perishable foods (lollies, noodles, chips, spreads), toiletries (deodorants, shaving creams, soaps), lip balms, books and magazines, however they cannot accept liquids, alcohol, pet food or clothing.

All donations must be received by Friday, November 30.

Miss Zugaro said they were also hoping to send the troops thank you letters from local schoolchildren.

“We’ve approached some of the schools in the area to ask the kids to write some letters; when they’re coming from the kids, I think they mean a bit more,” she said.
