Lo­cals favour park cafe

CITY of Can­ning ac­cepted a pe­ti­tion con­tain­ing more than 1000 sig­na­tures sup­port­ing de­vel­op­ment of a café or restau­rant at Shel­ley Beach Park.

The pe­ti­tion tabled by long-time res­i­dent War­ren Duffy was pre­sented min­utes prior to the start of the Oc­to­ber 16 meet­ing.

Coun­cil­lors agreed to re­ceive, but not en­dorse the pe­ti­tion as they had only 10 min­utes to ex­am­ine it.

How­ever, at last week’s meet­ing coun­cil voted to ac­cept the pe­ti­tion, de­spite con­fu­sion over sig­na­tures.

The meet­ing agenda on the City web­site stated the pe­ti­tion had 1299 sig­na­tures, 66 of which were from peo­ple who lived out­side the city bound­aries and 11 deemed in­valid as they did not com­ply with a Stand­ing Or­ders Lo­cal Law.

How­ever, the City said they had re­ceived ad­di­tional sig­na­tures after they up­loaded the agenda and the pe­ti­tion ac­tu­ally con­tained 1844 sig­na­tures.
