12 Strays of Christmas

Give a loving animal the best gift of all – a home

Canning Times - - FRONT PAGE -

PETS are a favourite Christmas present for young families and couples looking to welcome a new soul into their home.

But before you knock on the door of a breeder, think about how you can bring new joy into your home and save a life at the same time. There are hundreds of animals in shelters who would love nothing better than to cuddle up with you on a cold night and offer you their companionship.

Quite simply, you can create a Christmas miracle.

The RSPCA shelter in Malaga has 292 animals in its care, including some in community foster care. On this page are 12 terrific adoption options – our 12 Strays of Christmas.

This year alone, it has adopted 905 animals in need of a loving home.

“Animals who require rehabilitation can spend anywhere from eight weeks to several months or much longer in our care,” said Alex Nebigin, the media and communications co-ordinator for RSPCA WA. “No matter how long it takes, RSPCA WA will explore all medical and behavioural avenues to ensure animals in our care are given the best chance of finding loving new homes.”

People who aren’t in a position to adopt a new pet, but want to help a homeless animal can support RSPCA’s Guardian Angel Appeal. Visit the Guardian Angel website to be matched with an animal in care at the RSPCA. To adopt an animal:

RALPHIE Kelpie - Male, 1 Ralphie has come all the way from Kalgoorlie after being abandoned. He’s a big boy with an even bigger heart. Ralphie is clever and already knows how to ‘sit’ and ‘lay down’. He’d do anything for a treat so is a quick learner. He loves water and would enjoy hitting the beach with his new owner. He could live with older children.

ANDY Labrador – Male, 8 Andy is a handsome and playful boy. He can be a bit clumsy at times, so is guaranteed to bring some joy and laughs into your family. He’s confident and would thrive in a home with routine and strong guidance. Andy can be a bit excitable, so would prefer a home with older kids. He could also live with a calm, female dog.

RIZZO THE RAT Rat – Female, age unknown Rizzo the rat is a pretty low-maintenance black and white lady. All she needs to stay happy is fresh water, pellets and veg every day, and a nice clean cage to live in. Rizzo is a clever girl who loves to keep busy and enrich her life with toys. She will provide hours of entertainment playing in her cage and enjoying rat-friendly foodie treats.

PATCHES Domestic short hair – Female, 3 Patches is a friendly and outgoing cat who was abandoned by her previous owners. She hasn’t let the past get her down and is now patiently waiting for her luck to turn around when a new owner arrives to take her home. Patches is a confident lady who will not be shy about letting you know when it’s time for cuddles.

FRANKI & FELICIA Domestic short hair – females, 1 year / 6 months Felicia and her baby girl Franki are looking for their purr-fect new home. The sweet felines were very timid when they arrived at the RSPCA, but with plenty of love, they’ve learnt to trust humans again. Franki and Felicia are inseparable and will need to be rehomed together.

RICK THE ROOSTER Dutch Bantam - Male, age unknown Rick is a handsome brightly-coloured red and yellow rooster with his own special personality. He’s an outgoing boy and doesn’t mind being handled, but mainly enjoys simple pleasures like relaxing in the sun. If you’d like to adopt Rick, please bring a box or carry cage with you to safely transport Rick to his new home.

BELLA Boxer – Female, 4 Part-goofball and part-sweetheart, she’d make a great running buddy but once you settle in for the night she’ll make it clear how much she loves a cuddle. Bella can be a bit wary of new people, so she needs a patient family in her new home. She would love to be the only dog and is best suited to a home with no children.

BONNIE Domestic medium hair – Female, 11 weeks Bonnie is a sweet little kitten, who can be a bit shy to start with, but once she’s used to you and settled, Bonnie will happily spend the day purring away on your lap enjoying all the attention. She has a playful side too and loves to keep busy with toys and be given the occasional cat-friendly treat to encourage that loving bond.

ZEUS Kelpie – Male, 7 months Zeus’s nickname is ‘cuddle bunny’ because of his affectionate nature. He’s a little pocket rocket with oodles of energy, but he lives for love and pats. Zeus was surrendered to RSPCA with a sore and infected eye. He’s fully recovered and is ready for his second chance. Zeus will need a patient family willing to invest time in his training.

TIMOTHY Abyssinian – Male, 10 weeks Timothy is a shy little fellow who will need time to settle. With confident handling and time to bond with his new owner, Timothy will flourish into the perfect companion. He’ll need a secure hutch and plenty of fresh water, pellets and veg daily. Guinea Pigs love company, so Timothy would do best if rehomed with his brother, Terrance.

SNOWY Domestic short hair – Male, 8 Poor Snowy thought he was going to his fur-ever home back in 2012, when he was first adopted. But, unfortunately, circumstances changed and Snowy has found himself back at RSPCA. Snowy is a simple gent, who’s just looking for a loving home where he can relax in the sun or on the couch enjoying a good chin rub.

RAOUL Lop Eared – Male, age unknown Raoul just loves human company and can’t wait to shower his new owner with plenty of bunny cuddles and kisses. In his new home, Raoul will need a safe hutch or enclosure where he can stay cool in summer and snuggly in winter. Raoul loves munching on fruit and vegies and would enjoy fresh water and pellets every day.
