NOMINATING a friend, family member, colleague or yourself for a 2019 Western Australian of the Year Award is a quick and simple process.

Just ask former winner and nominator Fiona Stanley.

Professor Stanley nominated 2018 Western Australian of the Year Mike Daube.

“Mike is one of the most effective public health advocates in the world,” she said.

“He has probably done more than anyone to reduce tobacco consumption globally, and particularly in Australia.

“He has thus prevented millions of premature deaths and complications of smoking.

“He has also tackled alcohol, obesity and other major public health problems.

“And yet he has not been properly recognised and we thought that he would be a wonderful Australian of the Year,” she said.

Prof Stanley, who was nominated by a child health nurse for her award, said the group of people who got together to nominate Professor Daube was “thrilled” when he was announced the 2018 winner.

“I keep thinking of what he will do now that he has this platform,” she said.

Prof Stanley said his recognition as Western Australian of the Year was wonderful for WA and for public health.

Celebrate WA chairman Michael Anghie said that the anual awards celebrated the very best achievements of West Australians, whether they had an impact locally or further afield.

“I encourage every West Australian to think hard about who they know is doing truly remarkable work in their field, and take a few minutes to nominate them for an award, so they can receive the recognition they deserve,” Mr Anghie said.
