Narrabri nd adventure

In the heart of the Namoi Valley, in North West NSW, the Narrabri Region has a truckload of nature-based activities for adventure-loving families – here are a few of our favourites.

Sawn Rocks

Mini geologists will be enthralled by Sawn Rocks, a towering wall of basalt pipes, in Mount Kaputar National Park. The pipes are remnants of the park’s volcanic past, and you can get up close to them on an easy eucalypt-lined 750-metre walk that’s wheelchair accessible. There is a lookout with views of the fascinating rock formation; if time permits, follow the stairs to the creek bed for a wander with the kids.

Sandstone Caves

Another family friendly walking trail can be found in Pilliga Nature Reserve, where you can follow in the footsteps of the local Indigenous peoples. The forest trail leads you to Sandstone Caves, the site of ancient rock engravings, accompanied by interpretive signage. To make the most of your visit, join a guided tour with an Aboriginal Discovery Ranger, booked at Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre.

Yarrie Lake

Cool o† in the heat of summer by going waterskiing on Yarrie Lake, thought to have been created by a meteor. Although the water is milky, the lake is a popular spot to swim, stand-up paddleboard, waterski and wakeboard. The water is shallow, making it great for families, and there is a sandy beach and plenty of shade. There are even camp oven pits so you can set up for an afternoon feast. If you want to launch a boat, call the caretaker to ask about a licence first.

Narrabri West Lake

Go for a paddle on peaceful Narrabri West Lake, which was once a swamp before being transformed by local volunteers into a recreational playground. Take the family there for a kayak and swim or, if the wind is up, head out onto the water for a windsurfing session. There are islands at the southern end of the lake that are havens for local and migrating birds, including black swans. If you have little kids, you’ll make their day by also heading to the fun Pirate Park playground.
