Macca’s serves up valuable skills

“The new Moama store is set to bring 80 jobs to the region, which will likely rise to more than 100 once business kicks off.”

Working at Macca’s might not seem like a glamorous gig at first glance, but Echuca McDonald’s franchisee Scott Moller says a career at the Golden Arches can lead to some delicious opportunit­ies.

“It can be a stepping stone into multiple different facets of other industries,” the boss of Deniliquin, Echuca and the soon to be Moama McDonald’s stores, said.

“A lot of McDonald’s careers, from the corporate side of things, actually start from within stores.”

Scott said someone who starts their working life at a McDonald’s store at

15 years old will receive training and experience that will give them an edge over their peers.

“It’s not just the retail experience, it’s actually the fundamenta­l training of working in a team environmen­t. It’s troublesho­oting and thinking on your feet,” he said.

“It’s handling difficult situations and problem solving.

“At any one time, we can actually be making in excess of 200 to 250 burgers per hour.

“We’re not an industry where you can say, ‘listen, we’re busy. Can you come back tomorrow?’.

“There’s no rescheduli­ng here. We make a plan and we deal with what’s in front of us at the time.

“And I think that’s why those problem solving and planning skills are highly respected.”

Scott recently hired Helen Fitzgibbon as his general manager. She started her working life as a crew member at McDonald’s and climbed the ranks in the organisati­on.

After a successful career in high profile corporate roles, she came back to McDonald’s and is spearheadi­ng the opening of the new Moama store.

The new Moama store is set to bring 80 jobs to the region, which will likely rise to more than 100 once business kicks off.

Across the existing Echuca and Deniliquin stores, Scott employs about 210 people.

Deniliquin employs seven managers and is training another three, while Echuca employs 11 managers and is training another four.

The Deniliquin and Echuca stores work with district schools to provide and facilitate work experience, apprentice­ships and traineeshi­ps.
