BIGGENDEN Bakery is known throughout the Burnett for its great meat pies and bread.

On Friday, December 21, the ovens will shut down and the front doors close as an era comes to an end

Owner Garry Stark is now 71 while wife Bronwen turns 70 next month, but her ill heath has forced the issue.

They have been trying to sell their business for three to four years and now time is against them.

Mr Stark said they have had lots of lookers but no one had come forward to sign on the dotted line.

“It is a wonderful business for anyone willing to have a go,” Mr Stark said.

“We’ve got no other option but to close.”

The couple would have celebrated 44 years in business in the town’s main street next February.

Mr Stark has been involved with the bakery since 1963 when he did his apprenticeship with the baker at the time, Fred Duffin, before the business was purchased by Don Saunders.

Leaving Biggenden for a short time, the couple came home for Christmas and found the bakery for sale.

“We’ve been here ever since,” they said.

Four years ago the pair purchased the former Biggenden Medical Centre, outfitting it as a bakery.

Biggenden Bakery has always been a family affair as son Darren did his apprenticeship after leaving school under his father.

“Being the pastry cook he is the one responsible for the everyone’s favourite, the vanilla slice,” she said.

Another employee Janet Trigger had already started working at the bakery a few months before the Stark’s purchased it.

“So we think of her as part of the family,” Mrs Stark said.

“We will be sad to leave but we know it has to happen.

“Gary and I are both grateful for the friends and family especially our daughter-in-law Susanne who have stepped up and helped out whenever the need arose.”

BIGGENDEN BAKERY TO CLOSE: It will be the end of an era for Janet Trigger and owners Bronwen and Garry Stark when the business closes just before Christmas.
