Re­fine your breeder herd man­age­ment

NORTH­ERN beef pro­duc­ers look­ing to im­prove and re­fine breeder herd man­age­ment and ge­netic im­prove­ment plans will have ac­cess to a three-day Breed­ing EDGE work­shop in Char­ters Tow­ers on Novem­ber 13–14 and Novem­ber 22.

The work­shop will fea­ture a range of guest speak­ers, and par­tic­i­pants will be able to de­velop a breed­ing herd man­age­ment plan us­ing ge­netic and re­pro­duc­tive knowl­edge and tech­nolo­gies, to achieve de­sired pro­duc­tion tar­gets.

The work­shop is part of the Meat and Live­stock Aus­tralia EDGE Net­work of work­shops and is sup­ported by Queens­land De­part­ment of Agri­cul­ture and Fish­eries, Aus­tralian Cat­tle Vet­eri­nar­i­ans, Trop­i­cal Beef Tech­nol­ogy Ser­vices and Beef En­ter­prise Ad­vi­sory Ser­vices Pty Ltd.

Par­tic­i­pants will learn:

■ Cur­rent herd per­for­mance – what mea­sures mat­ter most. ■ Re­pro­duc­tion and re­pro­duc­tion loss.

■ Man­ag­ing the breed­ers sys­tems. ■ Bull fer­til­ity and man­age­ment.

■ Iden­ti­fy­ing ‘not so ob­vi­ous’ bull faults that im­pact re­pro­duc­tion.

■ Re­pro­duc­tive dis­eases and dis­eases im­pact­ing re­pro­duc­tion.

■ Breeder herd man­age­ment plans.

■ Ge­netic im­prove­ment of your herd (in­clud­ing breed­ing ob­jec­tives).

■ Ge­netic prin­ci­ples and se­lec­tion tools.

■ Se­lec­tion and se­lec­tion cri­te­ria for traits im­por­tant to you.

■ Breeds and breed­ing sys­tems.

The work­shop will be held at the QDAF Of­fice, 1-5 Prior St, Char­ters Tow­ers and runs from 8am to 5pm each day. The cost to at­tend is $1750 plus GST for one per­son from a busi­ness or $1450 plus GST for two or more peo­ple from one busi­ness.

Cost in­cludes com­pre­hen­sive set of work­shop notes, work­book, elec­tronic files, other ma­te­ri­als plus lunch and morn­ing and af­ter­noon tea each day.
