2018 reef cham­pi­ons

LEAD­ERS in on-farm prac­tices and ex­ten­sion have been re­warded for their in­no­va­tive work to re­duce and man­age agri­cul­ture’s im­pact on the Great Bar­rier Reef.

Held in Yep­poon on Na­tional Agri­cul­ture Day, the Reef Cham­pion Awards shone a light on such things as ni­tro­gen re­duc­tion prac­tices, wet­land con­ser­va­tion and re-veg­e­ta­tion of farms.

Mackay cane grower Gerry Deguara took out the Prince of Wales En­vi­ron­men­tal Lead­er­ship – Reef Sus­tain­abil­ity Award, judged and se­lected by Prince Charles him­self. YOUNG WIN­NER: Hay­ley Bracewell and her son Sid Craw­shaw, who won the Reef Youth Cham­pion Award – Un­der 15.
