Net $620m from live trade

AUS­TRALIA’S live cat­tle ex­port trade is worth an av­er­age $620 mil­lion to cat­tle pro­duc­ers. And it de­liv­ers 2029 di­rect jobs in an av­er­age year.

That’s ac­cord­ing to a re­port re­leased by Me­cardo that shows from 2012 to 2017, an av­er­age of 1.09 mil­lion cat­tle were ex­ported from Aus­tralia an­nu­ally, rep­re­sent­ing $1.2 bil­lion in ex­port value and $620 mil­lion in the pock­ets of farm­ers per year.

“Di­rect em­ploy­ment on farm as a re­sult of the live cat­tle ex­port sec­tor is cal­cu­lated to have av­er­aged 2029 for the 2012-2017 pe­riod,” the re­port states.

“How­ever, a mul­ti­ple of 4.83 for ev­ery on-farm po­si­tion ex­trap­o­lates to a to­tal em­ploy­ment rel­e­vant to the sec­tor (which en­com­passes farms, trans­port op­er­a­tors, fod­der sup­pli­ers, live­stock agen­cies, ex­port com­pa­nies, ship­ping con­trac­tors, port op­er­a­tors, vet­eri­nar­i­ans and fi­nan­cial ser­vice in­dus­tries) to an av­er­age of 9799 full-time equiv­a­lent po­si­tions for the 2012-2017 pe­riod.”
