Jockey eyeing off the big races
ROCKHAMPTON jockey Thomas Doyle claimed the 30th win of his young career at Eidsvold on Saturday and has his sights set on the bright lights of Hong Kong.
Doyle, 19, rode the fast-finishing Dudoomp to victory in the 2018 Eidsvold Cup, bolting home to pip the highly fancied Dangerous Danica at the post in a photo finish.
It was the 10th career win for six-year-old mare Dudoomp, a remarkable effort given her poor record on soft tracks.
Doyle timed his run to perfection, an impressive ride from a relatively inexperienced jockey. He grew up competing in show jumping and dressage before making the switch to the track this year.
The teenager has been racing just seven months but is already the top-ranked country apprentice and third best jockey in country Queensland.
Both he and owner Kevin Miller said they were stoked with the Cup win on their first visit to Eidsvold.
“It was a beautiful race,” Doyle said. “The track wasn’t the best suited for this horse but she handled the conditions well.
“We had her exactly where we wanted her.
“Down the straight we found the good running and she was able to come home nice and strong.”
Miller said he was relieved to go home a winner after a poor showing from another of his horses in the race prior.
“The races suited our horses so we decided to come out for a look,” he said.
“We had another run earlier, Excelcat, who didn’t have a lot of luck.
“But we’ve got a winner now so it’s all good.”
The performance reinforced Doyle’s reputation as one of the best in the business in the bush. He has found his calling and said he’s determined to forge a future in racing at the highest level.
“I’ve always wanted to be a jockey and got offered a chance to ride track work,” Doyle said.
“It’s six days a week, exercising thoroughbreds for a few trainers in Rocky.
“I want to get to Hong Kong but it will take a lot of work from here.
“I’ve just got to keep riding, improve, and hopefully I’ll get a chance to prove myself riding in all the big races in Sydney and Melbourne.”
