HOW THIS FAMILY-OWNED CRANE HIRE COMPANY HAS EARNED ITS SUCCESSES

Central Telegraph - - CQ INDUSTRY -

WHEN Neil and Beth Matherson started Matherson Crane Hire with one crane in 1980, they never dreamed it would grow tenfold and still be thriving after one of Gladstone’s most challenging downturns.

Matherson Crane Hire still operates by the same ethos it had during its modest, humble beginnings as a family-owned operation dedicated to its customers.

Now owned by Neil and Beth’s son Wayne Matherson, the company has experienced some of the highest of highs and challenging lows the Central Queensland industry sector has to offer.

Wayne said it was important for the business to stay loyal to its long-term customers in Gladstone who supported the business when it first began.

“Dad was a man who loved what he did. He wanted to provide a good life for his family,” Wayne said.

“He loved the cranes and was proud of what he achieved.

“The business’s core value has never changed, the number one priority is still customer service.”

Matherson Crane Hire’s clients range from major industrial companies to light commercial and construction companies.

Now with 17 employees and 10 cranes, Wayne said the business had enjoyed organic growth which allowed it to remain focused on its long-term customer base during the boom years of 2010-13.

“During the time of the boom a lot of people made the mistake of disappearing into those big, bright lights and forgetting about the local customers,” he said.

“We’ve always kept enough of our core fleet so we could still service our long-term customer base.”

The stable workforce and loyal customers during the past few years have given the business time to nurture its workforce culture as a family-friendly environment.

“My job is made easy by the people I work with. I’m always very appreciative of my management team, workforce and our customers,” Wayne said.

Matherson Crane Hire is proud to be a major sponsor of the Mount Larcom Show and champion mountain bike rider Michael England, plus many other local sporting and community groups.
