Hongcun Village
It is located in the northeast of Yixian County of Huangshan City, Anhui Province. There are well preserved architectural clusters including residential buildings, private gardens, schools, and ancestral halls in the region. The carvings on them are of high artistic value. The Chengzhi Hall, a landmark of Hongcun, is a residential building built in 1855 with wood and decorated with brick, stone, and wood carvings and gold gilding. It was previously the residence of Wang Dinggui, a successful salt merchant from the late Qing Dynasty. In 2000, Hongcun was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Xidi Village
It lies in the east of Yixian County. It is hailed as a link of ancient and modern Chinese history, and a museum of the ancient residence from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is said that this village is formed by the houses of generations of descendants of a Hu family. All streets and lanes here are paved with a kind of local bluestone. The ancient buildings are wooden with brick walls. The wood, stone, and brick carvings are rich and colorful in Xidi, and the village features distinctive spatial changes and simple and elegant architectural colors. Xidi reflects the achievements in the human living environment in southern Anhui, and is of high historical, artistic, and scientific values.
