Xi Jinping Attends Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference
On the evening of October 14, 2021, President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the second United Nations Global Sustainable
Transport Conference and delivered a keynote speech via video link.
Xi put forward a five-pronged proposal: First, uphold open interplay and enhance connectivity by strengthening both hard connectivity of infrastructure and soft connectivity of institutions and rules, and by developing four-dimensional connectivity of land, sea, air, and the Internet. Second, uphold common development and promote fairness and inclusiveness, putting emphasis on enhancing North-south and Southsouth cooperation and scaling up support for developing transport infrastructure in the least developed countries and landlocked developing countries. Third, uphold an innovation-driven approach and create more drivers for development, promoting deep integration of new technologies with the transport sector. Fourth, uphold ecological conservation as a priority and pursue green and low-carbon development, fostering a green and low-carbon way of transport. Fifth, uphold multilateralism and improve global governance while advancing cooperation in such areas as poverty reduction, health, transport and logistics, and infrastructure development in the context of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Xi announced that China will set up a Global Innovation and Knowledge Center for Sustainable Transport as a contribution to global transport development.
