2021/2022 Season Closing Concert
Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra
Date: July 9, 2022
Venue: Xinghai Concert Hall
Gustav Mahler directs us to ponder the meaning of life and suffering in his Symphony No. 2. The work opens as a funeral rite, while the second and third movements recount memories of bliss before conveying hopelessness and futility. A sliver of hope glimmers in the fourth movement, and eventually the power of faith vanquishes desperation. As Mahler once described this masterpiece: “One is battered to the ground and then raised on angel’s wings to the highest heights” — an apt description indeed of the Resurrection Symphony.
