Remembering 1950 (2021)
Genre: Documentary Director: Song Kunru
The remains of 437 fallen members of Chinese People’s Volunteers arrived in China on March 28, 2014, more than 60 years after the war broke out. In 1950, a large number of young soldiers went to fight on a foreign battlefield to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea. Faced with the cruel environment and an enemy possessing advanced military strength, they composed a majestic epic in history. Some of them came back, while others who had sacrificed their lives stayed forever in that foreign land.
From interviews with several veterans of various military ranks, the film tells the story of ordinary young soldiers at that time. The film breaks the time-line narrative and uses the form of storytelling to document real war experiences and reflect the change of fate of those veterans. This style highlights the historical and artistic value of individual memory, thus reflecting the unique persective and sense of the collective memory which Chinese people have of that period.
