BIG SKIES FESTIVAL
CHINCHILLA residents have shaved off their hair to raise money for cancer research.
As part of the annual World’s Greatest Shave event, residents and visitors alike braved the clippers for the worthy cause.
Having raised approximately $2500, the event had everyone smiling.
Chinchilla’s World’s Greatest Shave team ‘Perm Unicorn’ was captained by Krystle McConville, who organised the event after a trip to the hairdresser’s went wrong.
“A few months back a hairdresser stuffed up my hair to the point where I hated it,” Ms McConville said.
“My husband jokingly suggested I shave it and I didn’t think it was a bad idea.”
Though the idea came about in a humorous fashion, there was a serious side.
Ms McConville and other members of the team and their families had been affected by several types of cancers over the years, including leukaemia.
The cause was something close to the hearts of all involved, including Club Hotel owner Justin Byrne, who provided the venue for the shave. Mr Byrne even organised a multi-draw raffle and donated 10 per cent of the evening’s profits to the cause.
“It’s a great cause and we try to get involved where we can community base wise to support those things.
“We said we’d jumped on board and see what we can do to help. It was an easy one to say yes to.”
Several members of the Club Hotel staff also shaved their heads in support, including Mr Byrne, who hopes the event will be even bigger and better next year. ■ Turn to pages 21 and 24 for pics of the shave event.
