NBN comes to Chinchilla

Thousands connected to network

Chinchilla News - - NEWS -

THE National Broadband Network (NBN) has now been connected to the town and is available for Chinchilla residents.

Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said he had received confirmation from NBN Co that fibre-to-the-node technology was now available.

“About 3000 homes and businesses in Chinchilla can now experience the benefits of fast broadband via services delivered over the NBN access network,” Mr Littleproud said.

Switching to the NBN won’t be automatic, with residents and businesses needing to contact their preferred service provider to place an order to move their landline phone and internet services over to the NBN network.

“Regional areas in Maranoa will greatly benefit from e-learning, tele-medicine, video conferencing, tourism and business opportunities which a faster internet connection will provide,” Mr Littleproud said.

“Better access to communications infrastructure is one of my key election commitments and this rollout sets out a clear message – NBN’s superfast broadband is being rolled out to remote communities.”

Mr Littleproud said the Chinchilla switch-on was just another exciting step in the NBN roll out in the Western Downs.

“Last month, work started to connect about 1000 homes and businesses in Miles to the fibre-to-the-node network with the service set to be available during September and Dalby was the first town in Maranoa to be connected since January last year,” he said.

The Member for Maranoa said residents shouldn’t feel pressured to sign up straight away as Western Downs residents connected to the fixed line NBN will have 18 months to make the switch before the old copper network is turned off.

“I urge you to do your homework and find the best internet plan and provider for you, your family or business,” he said.

“The NBN isn’t just about the internet – it’s your phone too.

“Also remember to talk to your provider for any other landline services such as medical alarms, eftpos, fire or fax machines.”

To find out more, check your address on the NBN website at www.nbn.com.au/ check. Once your premises is active, you will be able to see a list of available providers to assist with choosing the right NBN provider and plan.
