Looking back at 110 years of local news
TO MARK the 110th anniversary of
we are taking a look back at two papers from our long history to delve into the major stories.
On the front page of the January 7, 1960 edition, we reported on violent storms that swept through Kogan, Brigalow and Warra.
“Violent storms, sweeping with terrific force through the Kogan, Brigalow and Warra districts on Tuesday afternoon, left a trail of devastation,” the reporter wrote.
“Several buildings were demolished, many houses and buildings were partially unroofed and, besides destruction to other property, considerable damage also was caused to telephone and power lines.”
On the front page of the January 5, 1961 edition, we reported on the case of the stolen watermelons.
“Three persons were each fined £5 and ordered to make restitution when they pleaded guilty in Chinchilla Court of Petty Sessions on Wednesday to charges of stealing watermelons, the property of Arthur John Horswood.”
