TIPSTER Craig “The Surveyor” Scutchings has taken out the winning title in this year’s Chinchilla News footy tipping competition.

Craig finished the NRL season with 234 points, claiming the win over David Littleproud by only two tips.

“It was a very close competition,” Craig said.

“It was a tough season to tip, with a lot of upsets and no real clear winners... anyone could have gotten into the finals.”

Craig has been involved with the competition for the past couple of years “with no real success” but said “this year was different”.

As the 2018 tipster winner, Craig received a trip for two to the grand final in Sydney on Sunday, September 30, with the prize including flights, accommodation, match tickets and a Darling Harbour cruise with entertainment, drinks and food provided.

“It was magnificent, a really well organised package and we had excellent seats in the stadium,” Craig said.

“Ironically this was the first live NRL game that I have been to, so, it was a pretty good experience to go from nothing to seeing it at the top level.”

As a “southerner” first and foremost, Craig identifies as an AFL fan. He said this degree of separation from the game and the teams were the secret to his tipping success.

“My strategy due to not so much following NRL boiled down to not having any particular favourite team,” he said.

“I was tipping whoever was the highest on the ladder, whoever was the favourite with the bookies, and if all of that was fairly unsure, then I would tip the home team.

“It was unbiased and unemotional.”

Craig said previously he had the tendency to be swayed by his work peers at Fyfe Work Partners.

“We had guys very passionate about NRL with some sort of bias for their own team so I was getting fed biased information,” he joked.

Although he didn’t pick the grand final winner, Craig said he was keen to get involved again next year.

“It’s a good local comp and I would recommend any local business get involved because it’s great exposure and it’s a hell of a good prize for such a small group of people to be in the running for.”
