December is here, Christmas is coming

IT’S officially ticked over into December and I feel it’s now acceptable to blast Christmas tunes whenever I choose.

Just the other day I put up my Christmas tree – the first time I’ve had my ‘own’ tree since moving out.

As I unwrapped my decorations and laid them out on the table, Christmas music I’ve listened to each year for as long as I can remember was playing in the background.

I’m pretty sure I was bounding about the house with delight.

Because the fact of the matter is I love Christmas, and the traditions that come with it.

Back home my mum had a particularly excellent tradition.

Every year when we put up the Christmas tree, she’d gift us a new decoration.

Then we’d hang it on the tree along with all the others.

It was, in my opinion, ingenious.

It meant that when I moved out I had a little box of decorations, all of which meant something to me, and all of which made me smile and think of my family when I pulled them out this week.

As the community gathered for the Christmas tree lighting last Thursday, I’m sure there were sparkles in the eyes of more than one young person (or young-at-heart person).

I know I’m looking forward to covering the next couple of weeks as Christmas events kick into high gear and street lights start twinkling.

Enjoy the festive season, stay safe, and I look forward to sharing in the Christmas spirit this year.
