RACING: Chinchilla Race Club has ended the year in high spirits after a fabulous Family Race Day.

It was take two of the event, after December 15’s races were washed out, becoming instead a well-supported phantom meet.

And despite the big event just the weekend before, there was still plenty of fuel left in the tank on Saturday as race-goers and party-lovers converged on the track once again.

Attendee Lisa Walsh said it was great to come for the second time in two weeks and praised the club for organising the events.

“They’ve done well,” she said.

The day certainly skewed more towards serious race-goers with two attendees, Ken and Helen Turner, joking they hadn’t gone to the prior event because they “come for racing, not for parties”.

With a slightly smaller crowd, the atmosphere certainly was more relaxed, though the excitement was tangible each time the gates opened and hooves thundered down the green.

Chinchilla Race Club president Don Critch said it was a good day with a strong crowd and “first class” racing.

“We were very lucky that we were able to get a race meet to cover the washed out meeting, which is quite rare,” Critch said.

“We had a very good phantom meeting last week and then today is just a bonus being able to run our six-race program.

“Racing side of things was first class, we had great support from trainers everywhere. One of the trainers came all the way from Texas and won a race, so they come from far and wide.

“Weather was perfect, track was perfect, it was just a great day.”

Race one was won by Paul Hamblin on New Alliance, while Brooke Mackie on Well Sighted nabbed race two. Sophie Wilcock on Pick of the Pubs took out race three, while Hannah English on Black Envy won race four. Race five was taken out by Joshua King on I’m No Ruby. The last race of the day, the Procrew Chinchilla Cup Open Handicap 1400m, was won by Alisha Ross on Blue Jest.

Critch thanked the club’s sponsors and new committee for their efforts this year.
