Conventional systems use one coil, but here it’s replaced by the coil pack, featuring two coils directly connected to the HT leads and subsequently, the plugs. The reason for the dual coils is because the system is known as wasted spark. With managed ignition, the system has no way of telling whether the engine is on its compression or exhaust stroke. So, the coil pack is used not only to provide slightly more charging time but also to fire the spark on both engine strokes — the one on the exhaust stroke is wasted — hence the name.
