Struts aren’t the easiest to replace, although the resealable versions the smaller-engined 109E can be topped up. A sagging rear end is common and while replacement leaf springs are available, it’s vital to opt for quality items in order to maintain the correct ride hide. Feel for tight spots in the steering box. It’s easier to sort on the earlier car as the box can simply be packed with grease, but that of the 116E uses nylon bushes which break up over time. The 116E often suffers from a worn drag link assembly – available on an exchange basis from the owners’ club for £135 – while the 109E’s idler arm commonly fails due to a lack of greasing.
