Q I’ve got a Mk1 Escort fitted with a 1300 Crossflow engine. I’m looking into building a hot bottom end for the motor but I’m on a fairly tight budget. What would you say would be the best components to use for both performance and price? Neil Davenport

Email A It’s never easy suggesting a way to increase your engine’s performance when funds are limited. A high-performance bottom end — which usually starts with having components lightened and balanced, and can go all the way through fitting top quality rods, pistons and crank — doesn’t come cheap. More importantly, it won’t show any power increases unless you’re planning to improve the top end — which means more money. Unless the longterm plan is to turn the engine into a screamer, there’s little point in starting on the bottom end of the engine.

If you’re looking for more power on a budget, we’d suggest that there are three choices here. The first is to get the engine breathing better so fit a K&N filter, a freer-flowing exhaust like an Ashley system and if the budget allows, a twin-choke Weber. This lot will probably show the best power-per-Pound return.

The next step, if funds allow, would be to fit a big-valve head and a Fast Road cam, which would effectively take it above GT/Sport spec. When you’ve added up the cost of all the parts to get the 1300 to GT spec and above, you might be better off with the third option fitting a 1600 Crossflow straight in. You could use your original gearbox, and the 1600 gives potential for bigger power when funds allow.
