BARRY WILLIAMS
CAR: MK2 ESCORT 1.6L
Spec: untouched ex-demonstrator
Some cars don’t scream for attention, but they do stand out a mile. BarryWilliams’ Mk2 Escort is one of these — a beautiful survivor car which has been in the family since new, and one which has been kept as original as possible while still having lived a full life. Barry’s Dad regularly bought brand-new cars from his Ford dealer, this 1.6L four-door MK2 being a slightly unusual car from the norm as it was seemingly one of the 100 demonstrators from the Saarlouis factory complete with some interesting details to lure in buyers who probably would forget the extras by the time their car arrived! Details such as aWeber twin-choke, Beta cloth seats and round headlights set these cars apart from the usual L specification.
The distinctive numberplate was transferred from Barry’s Dad’s previous Mk1, and thankfully not subsequently transferred to the replacement B-reg Orion when time came to replace the Mk2, as Barry’s Dad decided just to keep the car instead of accept the dealership’s lowball trade-in offer!
