“WITH LAST ISSUE’S PINTO CARB TEST IN MIND, I JUST HAD TO RUN A MANIFOLD ONE”
I’ve been in and around tuning, modifying and racing cars since the 1980s and was reading about them long before that. As a schoolboy I couldn’t wait to get the next issue of Cars & Car Conversions (CCC) and read about the latest hot modification, or what jets to put in a Weber DCD fitted to a Moggy Minor or Escort. Back in those days, long before the internet and a rolling road in every town, you just took everyone’s word that a certain carb or modification would add at least 10 bhp.
For a while in the late 1980s I worked on the retail side selling cams, manifolds, carbs and so on. It was a bit of an eye opener when I realised a lot of figures given out were just that, figures, often made up just to sell stuff. Car mags were still the be all and end off information, and David Vizard was busy pulling at the throttles of engine dynos and writing something every week. His stuff really fascinated me. Then the legend that is Dave Walker appeared on the scene and wrote actual factual stuff and gave us real, sometimes controversial results. Oh how I was envious of those guys!
