Steering Box

How to rebuild a typical recirculating ball steering box.

- WORDS and photography by gary st retton

Having discovered that there was no oil in my Land Rover’s steering box due to failed gaskets and seals, I chose to attempt a rebuild on the grounds of both cost, and experience gained. Talking money, the rebuild at £25 or so is ten times cheaper than a recon steering box. As for the experience – invaluable. I was hoping to restore positivity and as much lightness as possible to the steering. Don’t laugh; correctly set-up, a Landy’s steering can be surprisingly smooth in a container ship kind of way. Here’s how to rebuild this type of steering box at home.
