250 GTO smashes record
A 1962/3 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta (chassis number 3851GT) has become the most expensive car ever sold at auction, selling for $38,115,000 (£22,843,633) at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction in Monterey, California on 14 August. The 250 GTO model was designed to contest the 1963 FIA World GT Championship. Only 39 250 GTOs were built by Ferrari and this particular example is one of the best maintained and most raced of them all. 3851GT was the 19th Ferrari GTO to be completed and was invoiced on September 11, 1962. It was most recently owned by Italian enthusiast Fabrizio Violati and was the centerpiece of his Collezione Maranello Rosso of precious Ferraris, previously on view to the general public in the Republic of San Marino.
A 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196, sold for £17,735,702 by Bonhams at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, previously held the record.
