Mazda RX-7
1978-2002
The RX-7 reintroduced the Wankel engine to these shores and power for this sleek looking coupe came from a 12A twin rotor engine rated at 105bhp at 6000rpm. Locating the compact engine down behind the front wheels gave the rear-wheel drive RX-7 a low centre of gravity and an excellent fore-aft weight distribution. After several revisions, a redesigned second generation RX-7 came on the scene in 1984 powered by a 13B rotary engine and a year later Mazda released the 182bhp Turbo along with a RX-7 ragtop. The heavily revised third generation RX-7 came on the scene in 1991 and power on the fuel injected turbocharged models was now up to a very useful 255bhp.
