Following on quickly behind Robin’s Auto Union in the February issue was Clive Emery’s recently restored Vauxhall GTE. As these cars were once a popular choice amongst ‘boy racers’ in the late ‘Nineties, most surviving GTE’s Clive saw had been ragged to death and it took a while before a suitable unmolested example was finally located. Registered in 1990, this MkII GTE came with an impressive history file confirming that the cars’ mileage of just over 105,000 miles was spot on. Previously to Clive finding it, the Vauxhall had been stored off the road for ten years and a full nut and bolt mechanical restoration was followed by a bare metal respray. Fellow members of the Astra MkII Club recommended a specialist to rebuild the GTE’s 16-valve 1988cc engine and helped locate some of the hard to find parts to complete the restoration.
