SLIPPING CLUTCH PEDAL

-

The clutch pedal on my 1989 Renault 19 will suddenly drop to the floor when depressing it. If I release the pedal and then attempt to change gear again it is normally okay.

However, this problem has become more frequent over the last few months and I’m hoping to fix the problem soon.

Do you think it is the self- adjuster mechanism on the cable or could it be more serious and require the gearbox to be removed?

I would suspect that the problem is one which many Ford owners with vehicles made around that time also suffered, that of the clutch pedal quadrant adjuster failure.

The clutch pedal on your Renault 19 has a built- in adjuster mechanism which consists of a plastic quadrant and the locking mechanism, held in place by a spring.

I am not sure if the parts are still available from Renault, but I believe that from the dealer a complete pedal needs to be purchased.

Aftermarket repair kits are available for around £15 and are not too tricky to fit. You should also check the pedal box to ensure that it has not cracked, allowing movement when the clutch is depressed.
