DIMMING HEADLAMPS

The headlamps on my 1990 Volvo 460 have become so dim that they barely light the road ahead anymore. I can source second-hand headlamps, but I fear that they may be in a similar condition and, not wanting to throw my money away, was wondering if there was another alternative that may rectify the problem.

I notice that unlike more modern lamps the glass will come away from the headlamp giving access to the reflector.

This is a problem that can affect many vehicles as they begin to age. As you have discovered the glass is removable on your Volvo and this makes a repair much easier.

The problem may also be that a poor connection either to the bulb or in the earth, may be reducing the available voltage to the bulb and thus reducing the illumination. This would we worth checking before going to the expense of re- chroming the headlamp reflectors.
