OIL LEAK CONCERN

-

I have an upcoming task to perform and I wonder if you can guide me through all the work? My vehicle is an automatic 1985 Nissan 300ZX ( VG30E engine without a turbo). The problem I have is engine oil leaking out from the joint between the gearbox and engine.

I have done a small amount of research and realise that the most likely reason for the leak is that the engine rear crankshaft oil seal is leaking. I intend to tackle the job soon and have the necessary vehicle ramps and equipment, but I would like a little guidance. Are there any points in particular that I should be concerned about? John Pooly The first troublesome job will be removing the exhaust downpipe. This does need to come off before the gearbox can be lowered out of the way. As the exhaust fixings can be corroded, I would soak the fixings for the exhaust with a good dose of penetrating oil a good few hours before you intend to commence work on the motor.

Be careful when removing them, as if you do sheer a bolt or stud off you will then have to drill out the offending remains before being able to bolt it all back together again.

Once the exhaust is out of the way the gearbox can be unbolted and if you unbolt the torque converter, the whole assembly should lower down to the ground without having to manoeuvre it about too much. Be careful to not allow the torque converter to slip from the gearbox when lowering it down.

Once you get to this stage it will only be case of removing the driveplate to access the rear oil seal.

When fitting the new seal ensure it pushes in squarely and do not damage it by tapping it in one side at a time with a drift, use a large socket to ensure it is fitted evenly. Spreading a light coat of oil on the seal will prevent it from failing in the first few rotations.

The driveplate should be torqued up to between 90 and 108 Nm and once this has been done, the gearbox can then be refitted.
