S-TYPE PURCHASE ADVICE

-

I’m hopefully going to purchase a Jaguar S-Type, 2001 model. The vehicles seem to be exceptional value and I believe these are now regarded as Emerging Classics. Most I have looked at appear to be in a good condition and run smoothly, but before taking the plunge I would like to know if there are any points that should be checked in particular.

I’ve been advised to look on the Gov.uk website to check out the MoT history of the vehicle and this is something I will do before going to see the Jag, as it’s useful to see if there were any advisories at the last test. I’m not expecting to find that any prospective purchase will have a full-service history, but if I find one with such this will be a bonus. David Hewett The 3.0 V6 Ford unit fitted to the Jaguar S-Type is pretty robust and providing the oil and coolant look clean and the engine sounds smooth, there should not be any underlying problems. Any misfire or hesitation may be signs of trouble ahead and the vehicle would be best avoided.

Even after eighteen years you should find many of the vehicles have a fairly comprehensive service history and this would definitely be a plus point. There are of course a few weak spots on the S-Type and one of these is the coolant header tank. The plastic tank becomes brittle after time and will crack and leak. Providing this failure is spotted quickly enough no permanent damage should take place.

Another point to check is the wiper motor operation. The wiper spindles can wear, which in turn puts extra pressure on the wiper motor. Check for any play in the wiper spindles and also check that the wipers operate smoothly without sticking.

One point to note is that when replacing either the wiper motor or the coolant header tank, the top brace bar needs to be removed. The bolts securing this can become corroded and shear off, so it’s worth ensuring that these bolts are in place. Finally, the outer sills on these cars are covered by a plastic panel and corrosion can occur behind this sill panel unseen, so check this area carefully.
