MY MOTORING LIFE IN MODELS

-

Over the years I have tried to collect diecast models of all the cars that I have owned. I am missing some, such as the Herald 1200 estate, Morris 1300, Ford Scorpio in the correct scale, Vauxhall Senator 24 valve (represented currently by a Carlton GSi), three Kia Sorentos (but I do have photos of those) and the current Sorento in the correct scale. I also have a photo of an Alvis TA14 drophead which represents the car I learned to drive in. I had several Mk1 and Mk2 Granadas and several Scorpios over the years, including two of the 4x4s. Currently I own a 2015 Sorento and a 1978 Midget 1500.

The size I prefer (to match the majority) is 1/43. Where possible the models are bought or (in the case of diecast kits) painted in the correct colours. Some of them which were in the wrong colour have been dismantled and resprayed, but others in the wrong colour are too detailed to repaint.

The most expensive of the models by far (and also the heaviest) is the Standard Vanguard Phase 2 at over £110, but that is probably the one which means most to us. When I bought my Vanguard, I had a choice of that or an Austin 16. The Vanguard, with the registration 64 DMM, was the car I had when courting my lady wife – I used to take her out on a Saturday and repair the car on a Sunday! I fitted a re-con engine and steering box, but sold the car for £25 to fund our wedding 51 years ago. I still regret selling the Vanguard, but I don't regret getting married. David Sweetman
