Morris Minor Garage – and book!
Modelled on a 1920s Australian country garage complete with its corrugated iron frontage, walls and roof, Bill and Richard's Morris Minor Garage is located just north of the Victorian country town of Harcourt, about 1½ hours drive from Melbourne. Inside, the private collection includes around 20 Morris Minors, a couple of Holden cars and a pair of 1920s Chevrolets.
Among the Minors are five of particular significance. These are a 1956 convertible that was famously used in the Australian TV comedy series Mother And Son, along with possibly the only Minor police panda car in Australia, possibly the only Royal Mail Minor panel van in Australia, and our featured Minor Million – definitely the only one in Australia! There is also a 1928 Morris Minor, which is the oldest in the southern hemisphere and the fifth- oldest known of in the world. This is accompanied by a rare 1929 Minor Sports. The garage is open regularly to car clubs and community groups, but only by appointment, and is a popular destination for clubs touring the Victorian countryside. When Richard and Bill decided to restore their Minor Million, they thought it would make a good subject for a book, and so the whole process was photographed from start to finish. The book is called Morris Minor. One in a Million, A Father and Son Restoration, and having read it, I can confirm that there are few restoration guides for any brand of vehicle that describe the process in such a down-to- earth, honest and charming way.
