DRIVE-IT DAY EVENTS ORGANISED UP AND DOWN THE COUNTRY ON 24 APRIL
Sunday 24th April saw events all across the country being organised to celebrate the FHBVC's Drive- It Day initiative. One such event was organised by CM contributor Peter Love (helped by some very experienced marshals and friends) – a charity gathering and road run in the tiny village of Bodle Street Green, East Sussex. This saw an impressive turnout of over 250 exhibitors spanning everything that makes up the FBHVC family, from steam vehicles, cars, tractors and light commercials to 4x4s and motorcycles.
In the village hall there were model railways for the children (and grown-ups), besides a fine horticultural display including working stationary engines from members of the Weald of Power Club. At 11am some 52 of the 79 tractors went off on a 13-mile road run. There was also a fine line-up of around 150 cars, one highlight being a just-finished 1907 Stanley 20hp Roadster. This was originally the Stanley Works back-up car for the Vanderbilt races in the USA. The owner gave many rides around the village to people who wanted the experience of open motoring and steam acceleration in this very important historic car.
Thanks are also due to the team under Wendy D who raised over £1500 with a raffle for two very deserving charities – Prostate Cancer UK and
Ukraine Refugees – which was an excellent amount.
Peter said: 'It was a great start to the season for many, and in wonderful weather conditions.
I really appreciated everyone coming and enjoying all the various vehicles we had there and contributing to the great atmosphere.'
